Thank Goodness for Magnetism
Only 93 million miles from Earth, a certain G-type star is beginning to act up.
Every 11 years or so, the solar cycle brings a period of high solar activity. Giant islands of magnetism—”sunspots”—break through the stellar surface in increasing numbers. Sometimes they erupt like a billion atomic bombs going off at once, producing intense flares of X-rays and UV radiation, and hurling massive clouds of plasma toward Earth.
Scott Carpenter's Wild Ride
Revisiting the flight of Aurora 7 after 50 years
Fifty years ago this month—on May 24, 1962—Scott Carpenter became the fourth American in space. Five hours later, he also became the only astronaut in history to find himself alone at sea after his Mercury spacecraft splashed down 250 miles off course in the Atlantic Ocean.
New book available from Space in Miniature
Mike Makowski has recently released SIM 8: Space Suits. This 60 page book describes all of the space suits developed and used by NASA from Project Mercury to the Space Station. It includes over one hundred line drawings and photographs that provide the model builder a comprehensive technical reference on this subject.
Cleared for LAUNCH
LAUNCH Magazine was created in 2006 to celebrate spaceflight and the hobbies inspired by it. The magazine was published from September 2006 through December 2008. It included interviews with current and former astronauts, scientists and visionaries in all aspects of spaceflight and aerospace. The issues also included a wide range of hobby rocketry articles, including coverage of major national competitions as well as model construction techniques, and historically-important interviews with pioneers of the hobby.
Semroc and the Resurgence of Kit Mania
It has been five years since we “launched” LAUNCH Magazine. With that in mind, it seems like a good time to acknowledge three of the magazine’s top supporters who, without question, are among the model rocketry hobby’s heroes: Carl, Sheryl and Bruce McLawhorn of Semroc.
